London's improv scene has quietly become one of the biggest in the world. Hoopla — the UK's first improv theatre and the country's biggest improv school — programmes The Miller by London Bridge several nights a week, with a jam every Tuesday, and is turning twenty in 2026; the Free Association trains hundreds of students a term and runs shows Thursday to Sunday most weeks — often two or three a night — from its own venue in the Southwark arches; the Comedy Store Players have held their Sunday-night slot in the West End since 1985; and Angel Comedy's Bill Murray pub in Islington is the official UK home of Second City, with comedy every single night.

Angel Comedy — The Bill Murray
'The Bill Murray is Angel Comedy's very own dedicated club, pub and hub, open 7 days a week' — 'the UK's first ever community comedy club'. The Comedy Store Players
consecutive Sundays at The Comedy Store London are listed with named line-ups — Sep 13, 20 and 27, Oct 4, 11 and 18 all at 7:30pm, and Oct 25 at 6:30pm. Josie Lawrence, Lee Simpson and Ruth Bratt appear in every listed cast and Richard Vranch in all but one, joined by players such as Rachel Parris, Monica Gaga, Niall Ashdown, Cariad Lloyd, Marcus Brigstocke, Ali James, Alexander Jeremy and Lauren Shearing, with improvised music from Kirsty Newton, Steve Edis or Yshani Perinpanayagam on piano. Where can I take improv classes in London?
The two biggest schools are Hoopla, the UK's biggest improv school, with five levels from beginner to advanced across central London, and the Free Association, where a £20 taster leads into Levels 1 to 3 and then Premise, Organic and Narrative pathways in Southwark and at further class venues around the city. Angel Comedy runs courses at the Bill Murray including Second City programmes, City Lit teaches a cheap six-week course in Holborn, and Showstopper teaches improvised musical theatre. Is there cheap or beginner-friendly improv in London?
Very much — the Free Association's 90-minute beginner taster is £20 and the fee comes off a full course if you continue, its Indie Night and Big Jam tickets start at £5, Hoopla runs beginner taster workshops and drop-ins, and Angel Comedy hosts free comedy writing gyms. City Lit's six-week Friday evening course is £179, or £125 concession.
