Genre Replay
A scene is played once straight, then replayed in different genres called out by the host or audience.
Also known as: Film Styles, Genre Switch, Styles
How to run it
- Play a straightforward scene of about ninety seconds with a clear beginning, middle and end.
- Take a genre suggestion — film noir, nature documentary, telenovela, silent film.
- Replay the same story in that genre, keeping the plot beats intact.
- Repeat with two or three more genres, shortening each pass.
- End on the most extreme genre.
What it teaches
Structural memory and stylistic range, and it demonstrates vividly that content and treatment are separable.
Coaching notes
Insist the beats survive. A replay that becomes a new story is just another scene and the game has evaporated.
Where it usually goes wrong. The original scene is too complicated to remember, so nothing can be replayed.
