Scene work

Emotional Replay

The same scene, with identical dialogue, replayed under different dominant emotions.

Scene work · 2 players · 10–12 minutes

Also known as: Emotion Swap

How to run it

  1. Play a short scene of six or eight lines and remember the dialogue.
  2. Replay it verbatim, with both players holding a new dominant emotion — grief, delight, suspicion.
  3. Replay a third time with another emotion.
  4. Discuss what the scene appeared to be about each time.

What it teaches

That emotional reality rather than content determines what a scene is about. Also cures performers who believe characterisation means new words.

Coaching notes

Choose emotions that conflict with the dialogue's surface meaning. A cheerful eviction notice teaches more than a sad one.

Where it usually goes wrong. Players change the words, which destroys the comparison the exercise exists to make.
